Des Moines Downtown Farmers’ Market
The Downtown Des Moines Farmers' Market is celebrating its 50th season in 2025, continuing its tradition as a vibrant gathering place in the heart of the city. Held every Saturday from May 3 through October 25, the market operates from 7 a.m. to noon (8 a.m. to noon in October) in the Historic Court District.
A Milestone Season
This year marks a significant milestone for the market, commemorating five decades of supporting farmers, growers, and artisan food entrepreneurs from across Iowa. To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the market has expanded its footprint to include Fifth Avenue from Mulberry Street to Cherry Street, adding space for 22 new vendor spots (source: Greater Des Moines Partnership), including four new food truck spaces.
Diverse Offerings
With nearly 275 local vendors, visitors can explore a wide array of offerings, including fresh produce, meat, cheese, eggs, baked goods, plants, flowers, artisan packaged food, handmade art, and ready-to-eat prepared food. This season introduces 48 new vendors, such as 1100 Farm, specializing in functional mushroom products; Baan Vaan Ice Cream + Goodies, offering handcrafted ice cream; and Breann's Bread Box, known for organic sourdough bread.
Community Engagement
Beyond shopping, the market fosters community engagement through various activities and events. The expanded space allows for pop-up events like yoga sessions, enhancing the market experience. Additionally, the market supports initiatives like the Friends of The Market Program, encouraging community involvement and support.

My Personal Favorites at the Market
1. The Dogs
From tiny teacup pups in backpacks to proud retrievers in bandanas, the market is a dog lover’s paradise. It’s impossible not to smile when you're surrounded by happy tails and wagging tongues. Pro tip: some vendors even leave out water bowls and treats for furry visitors.
2. The Entertainers
Live music fills the air with everything from bluegrass to acoustic pop, and you never know when you'll stumble upon a talented street performer. These local artists bring so much life to the market and make the stroll between vendor stalls feel like a mini festival.
3. People Watching
There’s something really special about watching people soak in the morning sun with coffee in hand, discovering fresh produce, or dancing with their kids to the beat of a street musician. It’s a slice of pure, unscripted joy — and it reminds me why I love this city.
My Market Morning Routine
Even as a proud morning person, I’ve found that the Farmers’ Market is at its sweet spot between 9 and 10 a.m. By then, the streets are buzzing with energy, the sun is usually shining, and the food stands are still fully stocked. It’s the perfect window — lively, colorful, and full of life, which makes it ideal for snapping photos.
If you're someone who enjoys a quieter, more peaceful vibe, I'd recommend arriving closer to 7 a.m. when the market is just waking up. It’s calm, the lines are short, and there’s a different kind of charm in watching the city slowly come alive.
When it comes to shopping, I like to keep things spontaneous. I make a point to try something new each week and spread the love across a variety of vendors. That said, a few staples are always part of my ritual:
A stop at the Frisian Farms tent for their irresistible gouda curds
A visit to Friedrichs Coffee to sample their cold brew flavor of the week
And of course, a bouquet of fresh flowers and some seasonal veggies to brighten up my loft and vegetarian meals
It’s a routine that feels both comforting and adventurous — and honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
